2. Community Building: The Ploughman and Fisherman Brunch is an opportunity for likeminded individuals and organizations to come together, share ideas, and build a stronger community. Your sponsorship helps create an atmosphere of unity and shared purpose.

Who we are?

The Prince George's County Democratic Central Committee (PGCDCC) is comprised of 24 elected members from the eight legislative districts of Prince George's County. Additionally, gender balance members are appointed by the 24 elected members, so that there is an equal number of male and female members on the committee.

The PGCDCC is the county branch of the Maryland Democratic Party. While the Central Committee does not take a position on candidates in a contested primary election, we do promote the Party. Central Committee members support Democratic candidates. In addition, the PGCDCC has the official responsibility to fill vacancies for State-level offices.

The PGCDCC demonstrates a strong commitment to the Democratic Party and its mission.

Maryland State Seal showing Ploughman and Fisherman

The Maryland State Seal, like many state seals in the United States, is a symbol rich in history and meaning. It reflects the state's heritage, values, and aspirations. At the center of the Maryland State Seal are two prominent figures: a ploughman (plowman) and a fisherman. These two figures are deeply symbolic and represent important aspects of Maryland's history, economy, and identity.

The ploughman and the fisherman on the Maryland State Seal symbolize the state's strong connection to both agriculture and maritime industries. These two professions have played pivotal roles in shaping the state's culture and economy throughout its history.

Firstly, the ploughman represents Maryland's strong agricultural tradition. Agriculture has been a fundamental part of Maryland's economy since its early colonial days. The fertile land along the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries made the region ideal for farming. Crops such as tobacco, corn, wheat, and vegetables have been cultivated in Maryland for centuries. The ploughman's presence on the state seal acknowledges the importance of agriculture as a cornerstone of Maryland's heritage and economy.

Furthermore, the ploughman's role goes beyond agriculture; it symbolizes the state's commitment to land stewardship and responsible farming practices. Maryland has been a leader in promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation. The ploughman reminds us of the need to protect and preserve the state's natural resources for future generations.

On the other hand, the fisherman represents Maryland's strong ties to the sea and its thriving maritime industry. Maryland boasts a lengthy coastline along the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, providing abundant opportunities for fishing and seafood harvesting. The Chesapeake Bay, in particular, is renowned for its diverse and productive marine ecosystem.

The presence of the fisherman on the state seal underscores Maryland's reliance on fisheries as an economic driver. The state is known for its iconic blue crabs, oysters, rockfish, and other seafood delicacies. The fishing industry has not only provided sustenance and livelihoods for Marylanders but has also contributed significantly to the state's culture, cuisine, and identity.

Moreover, the fisherman serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting Maryland's waterways and aquatic ecosystems. Maryland has been at the forefront of efforts to maintain clean and healthy water in the Chesapeake Bay, emphasizing the interconnectedness of land and water resources in the state.

In essence, the ploughman and the fisherman on the Maryland State Seal symbolize the state's dual commitment to agriculture and the maritime industry, recognizing their historical significance and ongoing relevance. These figures embody Maryland's dedication to responsible land and water management, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship. The seal serves as a reminder of the state's rich heritage and the ongoing efforts to balance economic growth with the preservation of its natural resources for future generations.
